Cursor Puts an Eye on Your Coding Agent, From Your Phone

The developer was on a train between London and Manchester, and the build was failing. The error log scrolled across his phone, delivered by the same AI coding tool that had been writing the code on his desktop at home. He typed a short instruction into the app, watched the agent on his laptop work through the fix, and by the time the train pulled in, the tests were green. Cursor, the coding tool that has become one of the fastest-growing developer products in the industry, released its iOS application this week, letting developers monitor and direct their desktop coding agents from anywhere.

The app is a small feature with a large strategic meaning. Cursor has spent the past two years turning coding into one of AI’s most competitive markets, fighting GitHub Copilot and Claude Code for the developers who now write much of their software with AI assistance. The battle has been fought on model quality, price and workflow integration. With the iOS app, Cursor is betting that the next differentiator is presence: the ability to keep an eye on the agent without sitting in front of the machine.

The product logic follows from how coding agents actually work. The latest generation of AI coding tools does not just suggest lines of code; it plans tasks, edits files, runs tests and iterates until the work is done. That autonomy is powerful, and it is also unnerving, because the agent can go wrong in ways that are not obvious until hours later. Cursor’s answer is supervision at a distance: push notifications when the agent needs input, a live view of its progress and the ability to approve, redirect or halt work from a phone.

The mobile move is an admission about the state of autonomous coding. The industry’s most aggressive optimists describe a future in which software writes itself and humans merely review the results. The developers who actually use these tools describe something more modest: agents that can do a lot, but that still require a person to set direction, resolve ambiguity and catch mistakes. Cursor’s app is designed for that world, in which the human and the agent work asynchronously, with the human checking in from wherever they happen to be.

The timing reflects the intensity of the competition. Cursor, built by the startup Anysphere, has grown from a niche tool into a company with a valuation in the billions, and its rivals have matched its features release for release. GitHub, owned by Microsoft, has the distribution of the world’s largest developer platform behind Copilot. Claude Code, from Anthropic, has won converts among engineers who prize model quality. Each has tried to outflank the others; Cursor’s mobile app is an attempt to claim a use case, supervising agents remotely, that none of them has fully owned.

The app also speaks to where the market is headed. Developers are increasingly running multiple agents across multiple machines, and the friction of managing that work from a terminal has become a real cost. Tools that make agents easier to supervise will be adopted, and tools that force developers back to their desks will be abandoned. Cursor is betting that the developer experience of the future looks less like a text editor and more like a control room, with the phone as the dashboard.

Security is the open question. A coding agent with access to a company’s repository is a powerful and dangerous tool, and letting developers approve its work from a phone raises questions about who is watching what, and from where. Companies have already begun restricting how their engineers use AI coding tools, and the mobile app will test whether remote supervision feels like control or like an unlocked door. Cursor says the app uses the same authentication and permissions as the desktop product, with no new access granted by the mobile connection.

The coding-tool market has become one of the most valuable in software. Developers have adopted AI assistants at a pace that surprised even the companies selling them, and the tools have moved from autocomplete to autonomous agents in the space of two years. The market is large enough that every major technology company has a position in it, and the competition has driven prices down and features up.

Enterprises are the next frontier. Individual developers adopted AI coding tools first, and companies are now standardizing them across engineering teams, a shift that brings procurement departments, security reviews and compliance requirements into the picture. Cursor’s mobile app, which lets managers watch agents work, is aimed as much at the engineering leaders who oversee teams as at the individual developers who use the tools, and the remote-supervision pitch is one that enterprises have been asking for.

For the developers who have adopted agents, the app answers a practical need that has grown more pressing as the tools have become more autonomous. The coding agent does not sleep, does not get distracted and does not stop when its human goes home. The question was never whether to let it work unattended; it was how to keep a hand on it. Cursor’s answer, a phone app that lets the human check in from anywhere, is the latest step in the industry’s awkward dance between autonomy and oversight, and it may turn out to be the feature that decides which coding tool wins.
