Amazon’s Satellite Fleet Tops 390 as Internet Service Nears Launch

The rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral on the evening of July 2 carrying 29 satellites, and with them the practical completion of a promise Amazon made years ago. The launch, flown by United Launch Alliance, pushed the number of satellites in Amazon’s low-Earth-orbit fleet past 390, and the company says it has now deployed enough hardware to begin offering internet service this year.

Chris Weber, vice president of business and products for Amazon’s Leo satellite unit, announced the deployment on X, saying the company had completed “enough launches” to start initial internet service in 2026. The statement converts a long-running engineering program into a commercial deadline: Amazon now has a fleet in orbit, a service to sell and a competitor with a four-year head start.

The satellites are the core of a project Amazon has described as one of its most ambitious bets. The company plans to operate a constellation of thousands of spacecraft in low Earth orbit, where signals travel shorter distances and connections are faster than from the distant satellites used by traditional providers. The network is designed to reach homes and businesses that cable and fiber never served, from rural farms to ships at sea.

The program has been years in the making and has not been cheap. Amazon has booked launches on multiple rockets, invested in ground stations and manufacturing facilities, and absorbed delays that pushed early service dates to the right. Executives have said the project will require billions of dollars before it breaks even, a scale of commitment that few companies other than Amazon could carry alongside their core businesses.

The July 2 mission was the latest in a cadence that has accelerated sharply over the past year. Weber’s tally of more than 390 satellites counts hardware in orbit across several launches, and the company says future missions will expand coverage and capacity. The remaining work is operational: testing the network, selling terminals, and proving that the service works outside controlled conditions.

The satellite business also tests Amazon’s tolerance for long-horizon projects. The company has a history of funding initiatives that lose money for years before they mature, from cloud computing in its early days to international logistics, and executives have said satellite internet belongs in that category. Investors have generally accepted the spending while the core retail and cloud businesses kept growing, a patience the program now needs to reward.

The market Amazon is entering is dominated by one name. SpaceX’s Starlink has launched thousands of satellites and signed up millions of subscribers, and it has become the default answer for anyone who needs connectivity where wires do not reach. Amazon has said it will compete on price, on integration with its cloud business and on service quality, but Starlink’s lead in orbit is substantial and growing.

Amazon brings assets Starlink lacks. The company’s cloud unit can host the network’s computing backbone, its logistics and retail operations provide a distribution system for terminals, and its balance sheet can fund a multi-year campaign without flinching. Analysts said those advantages make Amazon a more credible challenger than the other entrants that have tried and failed to dent Starlink’s position.

Amazon has also had to manage the physics of the constellation. Low-Earth-orbit satellites have limited lifespans and must be replaced on a rolling basis, which means the launch cadence Amazon has achieved is not a one-time campaign but a permanent operational requirement. The company has said its satellites are designed to de-orbit cleanly, addressing the debris concerns that regulators and astronomers have raised about megaconstellations.

The regulatory picture is also shifting. Spectrum rules and orbital-debris standards are tightening, and new entrants face longer review processes than the pioneers did. Amazon has secured the licenses it needs for its planned constellation, but the pace of future launches will depend on regulators and on the availability of rockets, a bottleneck the industry has felt at every step.

The service launch will also test Amazon’s ability to sell hardware, not just software. Customers must install terminals and aim them at the sky, a step that has tripped up earlier satellite ventures and that Starlink has spent years simplifying. Amazon has said its terminals will be priced competitively and designed for easy setup, but the first shipments will show whether the promise holds in homes, farms and fleets.

The service launch this year will be a test of execution. Early customers will judge latency, reliability and price, and the first reviews will shape the narrative for years. Amazon has said initial service will be limited in coverage and capacity, with broader availability to follow as the constellation grows toward its full size.

For Amazon, the satellite business fits a pattern of building infrastructure that others depend on, the same logic that drives its cloud and logistics operations. The internet service is a product in its own right, but it is also a way to bind customers into the Amazon ecosystem, from the terminals they buy to the cloud services that power the network behind them.

Weber’s announcement did not include a precise launch date for the service, and Amazon said details will follow. The company has been here before, promising timelines that slipped, but the fleet count now backs the claim with hardware. The question is no longer whether Amazon can reach space, but whether it can sell what it has put there.
