Samsung’s Galaxy Glasses Take Aim at Meta’s Ray-Ban Line

Samsung officially launched the Galaxy Glasses at its Unpacked event, a pair of smart glasses built around Google’s Gemini AI and aimed directly at the Ray-Ban smart glasses Meta has sold with EssilorLuxottica. The glasses carry a 12-megapixel camera, run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip and are rated for nine hours of battery life — specifications chosen to answer the criticisms that have trailed the category’s first generation.

The product is the clearest sign yet that smart glasses are becoming a serious contest. Meta has had the category largely to itself, turning the Ray-Ban partnership into one of the more surprising hardware successes of recent years. Samsung’s entry, with the backing of Google’s AI and Qualcomm’s silicon, turns a one-company market into a two-company fight. Whoever wins gains a position on the most personal surface a technology company can occupy — the device users wear every day.

The Gemini integration is the feature Samsung is leading with. The glasses can see what the wearer sees, hear what the wearer hears and respond in natural language, drawing on Google’s AI models for everything from translation to navigation to identifying objects. Samsung’s pitch is that the glasses are not a phone accessory but a genuine AI device — a place where the assistant is always available without being pulled out of a pocket. That framing puts the glasses in the middle of the AI-hardware competition that Google and Samsung are waging together against Apple and Meta.

The hardware choices reflect lessons learned from earlier attempts at smart eyewear. The nine-hour battery rating addresses the complaint that smart glasses cannot last a day; the 12-megapixel camera is positioned as good enough for the photos people actually want to take; the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip, designed with power efficiency in mind, keeps the device light. Samsung has styled the glasses to look like ordinary eyewear, betting that customers who rejected earlier, bulkier devices will accept a product that does not announce itself.

Battery life remains the category’s quiet constraint. Nine hours covers a workday, but heavy use — continuous camera, constant assistant queries — will drain it faster, and the habits of glasses users are still being formed. Samsung has addressed the constraint with efficient silicon and power management, but the trade-off between capability and battery will continue to shape the product’s evolution. The company’s answer, like Meta’s, is that glasses are worn, not stared at — the battery has to last the day, and the device has to be light enough to forget.

The launch also carries implications for the broader supply chain. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 chip, already used in some of the category’s early products, becomes the platform for Samsung’s entry as well, consolidating the silicon layer around a single supplier. Google’s Gemini, meanwhile, becomes the default assistant across the leading glasses lines that run it — a position that matters as the AI assistant becomes the interface through which glasses deliver their value. The product is, in that sense, a joint venture of the companies that supply its components.

The partnership structure is as significant as the product. Google and Samsung have been building an AI alliance — Google providing models, Samsung providing hardware scale — and the Galaxy Glasses are the most ambitious result so far. The arrangement lets Google put its AI in front of consumers without building its own glasses at scale, and it lets Samsung compete with Meta without developing a full AI stack from scratch. It also creates tension: Google sells its own Pixel hardware, and the two companies remain rivals in phones.

The market context favors the entry. Smart glasses remain a small category, but they are growing, and the technology that makes them useful — capable AI, efficient chips, better cameras — has improved faster than the products themselves. Meta’s success proved consumers will wear cameras on their faces if the trade-offs are acceptable. Samsung’s task is to prove it can match that acceptance with a product built in partnership rather than in-house.

The competitive stakes extend beyond the two companies in the fight. Apple is widely believed to be working on glasses of its own, and Google’s partnership with Samsung does not prevent it from building hardware with other partners. The category is still early enough that no company has locked in the habits of users. Samsung’s scale in distribution — its relationships with carriers and retailers around the world — gives it a structural advantage in getting the product onto faces. Whether that translates into the word-of-mouth success Meta has enjoyed depends on whether the product delivers in daily use.

Analysts said the immediate test will be distribution and price. Samsung sells through carriers and retailers in a way that Meta’s direct-to-consumer approach does not, which could give the glasses a reach the category has not seen. The longer-term test is whether the glasses earn a place in daily life — whether people wear them when the novelty fades. Samsung has entered the fight with credible hardware and a powerful ally. Whether it can take the category from Meta is now a question of execution, not ambition.

For now, the category has what it lacked a year ago: competition. Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses proved the demand; Samsung’s entry validates the market and raises the quality bar. The next generation of smart glasses will be judged against the best of both, and the pressure on price, battery and AI capability will only intensify. Consumers, for the first time, have a real choice — and that, more than any single specification, is the story of the Galaxy Glasses launch.
