Tesla’s Roadster, a Decade Late, May Finally Debut This Month With Rocket Thrusters

The prototype was unveiled in 2017, a sleek two-seater that Tesla promised would be the fastest production car ever made. Nearly ten years later, the car still has not shipped. Now The Information reported Aug. 14 that Tesla plans to reveal the production Roadster as early as this month, with a demonstration of the cold gas thrusters that would make the car, in the company’s words, able to fly.

The event, planned at SpaceX’s Texas facility, would combine the two halves of Elon Musk’s empire in a single spectacle: a car from Tesla using propulsion technology developed for rockets. Cold gas thrusters, which expel compressed gas to produce thrust, would be mounted on the Roadster to give it short bursts of acceleration and, in the company’s telling, brief moments of being airborne. Whether a car can actually hover or fly is a question engineers have debated since the claim was made.

The Roadster has been the longest-running promise in Tesla’s history. Unveiled with a reservation price of $200,000, the car was supposed to arrive by 2020, then slipped repeatedly as Tesla focused its resources on the Model 3, the Model Y and then the Cybertruck. Musk has kept the project alive in interviews, describing the Roadster as a halo car that would showcase every technology Tesla has developed, from new battery chemistry to the SpaceX-designed thrusters.

The timing of the reveal matters for Tesla’s product story. The company’s lineup has aged, its sales have flattened in some markets, and investors have been waiting for proof that Musk’s attention, divided among Tesla, SpaceX, X and the AI business now folded into SpaceX, can still produce a new vehicle. The Roadster, even in small volumes, would be a demonstration that the company can still build something extraordinary.

The production timeline, according to people familiar with the plans, points to 2027 for the first deliveries. That would make the car roughly ten years late, an awkward fact that Tesla has handled by positioning the Roadster as a different kind of product: not a car that competes with other cars, but a technology showcase that pushes the boundaries of what a road vehicle can do. At $200,000 and above, it does not need volume to matter.

The cold gas thruster demonstration is the risky part of the plan. Tesla has described the technology in patents and presentations, and Musk has said the thrusters will give the car “short bursts of acceleration” and the ability to “fly briefly,” wording that has drawn both excitement and ridicule. Engineers who have reviewed the concept say compressed-gas thrusters of the size a car could carry would produce modest force, enough for a visible effect at a launch event but not for sustained flight.

The SpaceX connection gives the claim credibility that a normal automaker could not muster. The company that actually builds rockets says it will adapt its technology for a car, and the demonstration at the Texas facility, home to Starship development, is designed to make that point visually. Whether the event features an actual hovering car or a staged effect is unclear, and Tesla has not said what the public will see.

The Roadster’s business case has never been about profit. Tesla has said repeatedly that the car exists to push the brand and showcase technology, the way the original Roadster of 2008 did before the Model S proved the company could scale. The new Roadster is expected to set records for acceleration and top speed, and its battery and cooling systems are said to preview technology that will appear in future mass-market models.

The reveal this month, if it happens, would come at a moment of intense scrutiny for Tesla. The company faces slowing growth, rising competition from Chinese automakers and questions about Musk’s divided attention. A successful Roadster debut would remind investors what Tesla does best, while a flawed event would give critics another data point. The stakes of a car show are higher than the car itself.

The engineering details that have leaked over the years give the car its mystique. Tesla has said the Roadster will accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in well under two seconds, a figure that would put it ahead of every production car ever built, and its top speed is expected to exceed 250 miles per hour. The battery pack is said to be the largest Tesla has ever installed, and the company has promised a range figure that would make the car practical as well as fast. Those specifications, if delivered, would justify the price and the wait.

The decade-long wait has built an audience that no conventional launch could have produced. Reservations from 2017 are still on the books, and the car’s legend has grown in its absence. When Tesla finally pulls the cover off the production Roadster, with SpaceX thrusters attached and the Texas facility as a backdrop, the question will no longer be whether the car exists. It will be whether the flying part was worth the wait.
