Micron’s Taiwan Unions Threaten Strike Over Profit Sharing

Two unions representing about 10,000 of the roughly 15,000 workers at Micron Technology’s plants in Taiwan say they will put a strike to a vote unless the company rebuilds its bonus system, pushing a labor dispute into the supply chain for the AI memory chips that have lifted the company’s profit to records.

The unions at Micron’s Taoyuan and Taichung operations told Reuters on Sept. 1 that an internal survey found more than 80% of members support industrial action. Under Taiwanese labor rules, a union must win majority support in a direct secret ballot before a strike can begin, so the threatened vote is the first formal step in a confrontation timed to the height of the AI boom in memory chips.

The demands are sweeping. Workers want a one-time payment equal to roughly 83 months of salary for this year, and starting next fiscal year they want 15% of operating profit distributed quarterly to employees, replacing the company’s current incentive program with a fixed share of the earnings their factories generate.

The unions argue that profit-sharing arrangements at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, Micron’s two main rivals in the memory market, leave Taiwanese workers trailing their Korean counterparts by a widening margin. The Korean companies have paid out large incentive pools as memory prices climbed, and workers in Taiwan say they deserve the same treatment from an employer that makes much of its AI-era profit on their factory floors.

Micron’s Taiwan unit responded on Sept. 2 that this year’s performance bonus will be the largest ever paid, with details of the plan to be announced in October, according to Reuters. The company promised a record payout for the current year but said nothing about changing the formula for the years after.

Taiwan is Micron’s largest manufacturing base, with cumulative investment of NT$1.4 trillion, or about $43.9 billion. The island’s plants turn out conventional DRAM and high-bandwidth memory, the HBM packages that sit beside AI accelerators, making Taiwan central to the product lines now driving the company’s finances.

Micron’s position in Taiwan was built through acquisitions. The company took over memory operations in the country more than a decade ago when it bought the assets of a bankrupt Japanese chipmaker and its Taiwanese partner, then purchased the remaining stake in Inotera Memories in 2016 to take full control of the Taichung complex. Today the island is where the company makes much of the DRAM and HBM that feed AI servers.

The AI memory boom has been good to Micron. Prices for DRAM and HBM have climbed as server makers compete for supply, pushing the company’s profit to historic highs and turning its Taiwanese factories into some of the most valuable production capacity in the industry.

Workers in South Korea agitated first. Samsung Electronics staged its first strike since its founding in 2025 over pay and bonuses, and SK Hynix employees have pushed for a larger cut of the windfall from HBM sales that made their company one of the biggest winners in the memory market. The Taiwan unions cite those payouts as the benchmark for their own demands.

The confrontation also reflects how the memory market has changed. Years of boom and bust thinned the field of DRAM suppliers to three major companies, and the AI boom has lifted prices across all of them. Unions at each producer have noticed that a cycle that once forced layoffs now produces windfalls, and they are pressing their claims while skilled workers are hardest to replace.

Labor action is rare in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, where the biggest manufacturers have tended to resolve pay disputes through negotiation. A formal strike vote at Micron would be an unusual escalation, and one that other chip employers on the island will watch closely if it succeeds.

The stakes extend beyond one company’s payroll. Memory suppliers have run with little spare capacity as AI demand outstrips supply, and analysts said a prolonged stoppage at Micron’s Taiwanese plants would squeeze the market for DRAM and HBM further at a moment when server makers are competing for every bit of available output.

The customers on the other side of the table are watching too. Much of the industry’s advanced memory now moves under multi-year supply agreements that buyers signed to secure capacity, and those contracts assume the factories keep running. A stoppage in Taiwan would test not only Micron’s ability to deliver but the broader assumption that the world’s most important memory supply is safe.

Both sides still have room to move. The October announcement suggests management wants to keep control of this year’s payout, while the unions have framed their demands as a test of whether workers share in the AI windfall their labor helped create. How workers respond to the promised record bonus, and whether management budges on the structural demand, will determine whether the strike vote ever happens.

The dispute also carries the memory of the industry’s cycles. Memory makers have swung between boom and bust for decades, and Taiwanese employees who worked through downturns marked by layoffs and pay freezes now see an upswing they want to cash in on while it lasts. Unions that waited through lean years are not inclined to be patient through the fat ones.

At stake is a question that runs through the AI boom: how the gains from record profits are divided between shareholders and the people on the factory floor. Micron’s answer, expected in October, will be read by workers across the industry it supplies, and by rivals in Korea watching how far its employees get.
